Beate Bartel / Gudrun Gut / Bettina Köster (Hg.) – M_Dokumente. Mania D., Malaria!, Matador (Ventil Verlag, book)

When punk took hold in the Federal Republic of Germany, things got weird very quickly. It remains particularly odd that the role of bands like Mania D., Malaria! and Matador too often goes unmentioned when it comes to the genesis of the so-called Neue Deutsche Welle. With the anthology »M_Dokumente. Mania D., Malaria!, Matador,« available in English and German, edited by Beate Bartel, Gudrun Gut and Bettina Köster and published by Ventil Verlag, this is now being rectified. In addition to an oral herstory about these nuclei of West Berlin music culture in the 1970s and 1980s, the volume also contains texts by Christine Hahn, Diedrich Diederichsen and Nick Cave. The release is rounded off by a 2LP box set or double CD called »M_Sessions« on Gut's label Moabit Musik, which contains original recordings by the three bands as well as new interpretations by the Gut-directed Monika Werkstatt, featuring artists such as Annika Henderson, Antye Greie-Ripatti and Midori Hirano.
