Releases of the Month, February 2022

The brand new issue of field notes for March and April 2022 is full of thoughts about and reports on alternative collective practices. »Hosting or attending public spaces has itself become a question of experimentation and reconfiguration. Where does the experience of the pandemic lead us when it comes to transforming our practices and behaviors?«, ask Kamila Metwaly and Berno Odo Polzer of MaerzMusik – Festival für Zeitfragen already in the issue’s Op-Ed. Answers come first from the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop’s interview about the the event »LOVE:15« and also from Mazen Kerbaj, who for his new album »Sampler/Sampled« has made his sounds available to musicians from all over the world.

But also the February edition of our Releases of the Month are full of collaborations. Whether it's constellations of two, as in the case of Sheng Jie 盛潔 & Shen Jing 沈靜, Jim O'Rourke & Mats Gustafsson, Kajsa Magnarsson & Marta Forsberg and My Hellgren & Peter Söderberg, an anthology of experimental music from Japan or Ale Hop's new album on Karlrecords based on sonic transmissions from all over the world: in the music world, traditional and, before the pandemic, seemingly insurmountable boundaries are being crossed with ease at anygiven minute. With these 15 music releases and two interdisciplinary books as well as a composition project also based on collaboration, the short month of February offers all kinds of material to rethink artistic and perhaps even social practices and behaviours.

Not only the joy of collaborative creation, but also mourning can be dealt with collectively (and creatively): with »Get This: 32 Tracks For Free - A Tribute to Peter Rehberg«, friends and fellow artists released a heart-warming, ear-splitting tribute compilation to the owner of the Editions Mego label, who died unexpectedly last year. An enriching compilation of adventurous music, as it would have been right up his alley.
