Crush String Collective – Aeriform (Barkhausen, LP/CD/digital)

The Crush String Collective is exceptional in several respects. This is already expressed in the name of the Copenhagen ensemble, whose working method is indeed a collective one and does not depend on the work of external composers. The seven musicians are by no means interpreters, but improvisers and composers at the same time; long-term, dynamic collaborators, one might say. »Aeriform« is their debut album and brings together twelve pieces written together in direct, sometimes spontaneous collaboration. Although the collective’s background in chamber music can still be heard on these pieces, the septet eschews its conventions through the challenging use of unusual techniques and idiosyncratic structural twists. An exceptional album on evey level.
